Promune is a natural, herbal supplement regarded as a powerful immune booster and mood enhancer. It is an excellent tonic for a general feeling of well-being and calmness, benefitting sufferers of depression and anxiety. It is also effective for managing side-effects of cancer and tuberculosis (TB), namely weight loss and loss of strength and endurance, helping to increase energy levels.

The main ingredient in Promune, Sutherlandia, is a herb classified as an adaptogen. Adaptogens are safe and effective and do not contain any drugs, so can be used by athletes. They help the body to adapt better to its environment and increase its resistance against various forms of stress, including combat fatigue and physical endurance, they help regulate blood sugar and strengthen the immune system.

Adaptogens support the adrenal function. The adrenal glands, at the top of the kidneys, manufacture and secrete steroid hormones such as cortisol, estrogen and testosterone which are really important for life, health and vitality. If the adrenal function is low, the body cannot respond and adapt well to stress, which can lead to numerous health problems.

Pharmacological action:

Promune contains Suntherlandia extract from the aerial parts of the Suntherlandia frutescens plant. Its constituents are L-canavanine, pinitol, GABA and asparagine.

L-canavanine, a non-protein amino acid, has been shown to be an inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase.

Pinitol is used in the treatment of various metabolic disorders.

GABA is defined as a non-essential amino acid and plays an important role in the biosynthesis of glycoproteins and exists in all cell types.

Aspargine assists the central nervous system to maintain a degree of balance, preventing over-excitation or –relaxation. It also helps to stimulate the kidneys and liver to function effectively.

Sutherlandia frutescens

The medicinal properties of the Sutherlandia frutescens plant have been widely used and respected for a long time in South Africa.  Traditionally, an infusion or decoction (mashing, then boiling in water) was made from the leaves.

Sutherlandia is also thought to have some anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic activity and research in this is on-going.

The plant grows naturally in the dry areas of South Africa.  The original inhabitants of the Cape, the Khoi San and Nama people washed wounds with a Sutherlandia decoction and took the tonic to reduce fevers. Zulu warrior widows used it as a gentle tranquilliser during the period of mourning, to aid their grief, as it can elevate mood. The early colonists used it to treat chicken pox and stomach problems and in the treatment of internal cancers.  Those with eye problems also bathed their eyes with the decoction.

Sutherlandia frutescens has also been cultivated as a garden plant with its beautiful red flowers, often referred to as the ‘Balloon pea’ because of its seed pod.

It is also known as the ‘Cancer Bush’ with a reputation as an important ‘immune booster’ tonic to improve the overall health of cancer and HIV/AIDS patients. Claims of it being a ‘cancer cure’ are over-stated but there does appear to be a beneficial effect for those with immune disorders, as it stimulates the immune system. The main advantage is that the tonic helps the body to better cope with the illness.

NB: Cancer patients should be assessed and managed by a healthcare practitioner and appropriate decisions made as to if/how Sutherlandia can be used as part of their regime.

In Sotho it is called motlepelo, meaning ‘bringing back the heart/light’ – the plant is traditionally used for shock and stress. Zulu warriors returning from battle would be given an infusion of Sutherlandia as a calming tea.

The ancient Zulu name insiswa means ‘the one which dispels darkness’ – referring to the tonic’s anti-depressant properties and wide-ranging effects.

The present Zulu name unwele means ‘hair’ – stopping people ‘pulling out their hair’ in distress!
