Ingredients & Directions

Lycopene

This is a carotenoid and a powerful antioxidant found in red tomatoes. As such it has an important role protecting cells and tissues from the damage done by free radicals and ‘bad’ cholesterol. There is a proven link between low incidence of prostate cancer in southern Mediterranean countries where tomato consumption is high. Studies have also shown that lycopene may reduce prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, an indication of prostate health. Women with high levels of lycopene are also far less likely to have cervical cancer and it may also help to keep breast tissue healthy

Ellagic acid

This is a natural nutrient found in fruits such as raspberries, strawberries, grapes, pomegranates and cranberries and nuts, such as walnuts and pecans. It works in synergy with lycopene. Research shows it has the ability to prevent types of cancer cells from multiplying and may protect against certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer. Laboratory research seems to indicate that Ellagic Acid has some anti-cancer properties, causing cell death in cancer cells. It appears to have the ability to inhibit mutations within a cell’s DNA. Ellagic Acid may also help the liver to deal with some cancer causing substances in the blood. Ellagic acid in pomegranates may also reduce the incidence of hormone-dependent breast cancer as it inhibits the enzyme aromatase which converts androgen to oestrogen, which is a key factor in the development of breast cancer. Studies have shown it reduces growth of breast cancer cells in tissue cultures, due to its effect on oestrogen. It is considered to be a cancer inhibitor, causing apoptosis or normal cell death in cancer cells without damaging healthy cells. Current cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation do not do this, they indiscriminately kill cancer and normal cells alike, in addition to compromising the immune system. Italian researchers found that prostate cancer patients reported a reduction in side-effects when undergoing chemotherapy but it did not show that the progression of the disease was slowed.

Zinc Picolinate

Elemental zinc. Zinc levels tend to be lower in older people so may need a boost. Zinc helps replenish and strengthen the prostate gland.

Formula

Lycopene 10mg
Ellagic Acid 105mg
Zinc Picolinate 35mg

Dosage and directions for use:

Take one capsule daily (to help with prevention).
Dose can be increased to two capsules, three times a day (for those with existing conditions).
To be taken with water after a meal.

Pharmacological action:

Promato contains Lycopene, Ellagic acid and Zinc picolinate. Lycopene is extracted from ripe tomatoes and is the pigment that gives fruits and vegetables their red colour.

Lycopene is considered a carotenoid but has no Vitamin A activity. It has strong antioxidant activity and can scavenge free radicals and quench singlet oxygen [molecules] to prevent oxidation damage to DNA. Lycopene has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of breast, lung and prostate cancer in vitro.

Ellagic acid is found naturally in various berries. Experiments found that it prevents and inhibits the growth of tumours caused by certain carcinogens . It also has antioxidant activity and can scavenge free radicals and quench singlet oxygen molecules.

Zinc is an essential trace element which aids the immune system, participates in antioxidant enzyme systems and helps to detoxify the liver. It has a normalising effect on the prostate and has a positive influence on male fertility.

Mode of action:

Promato’s action is due to the synergic action of its components. Lycopene is a proven potent antioxidant in vitro and in humans. It reduces the susceptibility of lymphocyte DNA to oxidative damage, inactivates hydrogen peroxide and nitrogen dioxide and protects lymphocytes from nitrogen oxide induced membrane damage and cell death. Evidence suggests there are other mechanisms of action for lycopene, including modulation of intercellular gap junction communication, an anticancer mechanism. In addition, lycopene at physiological concentrations has been shown to inhibit human cancer cell growth by interfering with growth factor receptor signaling and cell cycle progression, specifically in prostate cancer cells. Data for Ellagic acid from Dr. Daniel Nixon’s laboratory at the hollings Cancer Centre in the Medical University of South Carolina and other investigations indicates that it:

  • Activates detoxifying enzymes in the liver resulting in the clearing of cancer-causing chemicals (mutagens) in the serum

  • Prevents the binding of carcinogens to cellular DNA

  • Serves as an antioxidant in the scavenging and clearance of highly destructive free radicals

  • Induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) in cancerous cells Stimulates the immune system for the destruction of cancerous cells.

The greatest concentration of zinc is found in the male prostate (10 times more than in any other organ) and zinc levels have been shown to decrease significantly during the incidence of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and prostatitis. Zinc reduces the body’s level of prolactin, a hormone that stimulates synthesis of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), believed to promote malignant growth of prostate cells.
